Each team has a G-League affiliate with two available minor league roster spots.
Any player with fewer than 100 career NBA games played may be placed on a team’s G-League affiliate at any time.
G-League players do not count against their team’s salary cap as long as they remain on the G-League roster. Whenever a G-League player is called up to their team’s main roster, his salary is immediately added to the team’s salary.
Minor league players may be called up to their team’s main roster at any time unless doing so would put the team’s salary over the salary cap.
Teams may move players freely between their main roster and minor league affiliate, as long as the player has not crossed the 100 games played threshold. Once a player plays his 100th NBA career game and is taken off the minor league affiliate for any reason, he cannot be placed on any team’s minor league roster for the remainder of his career. Note that this means minor league players who have played 100 or more games and are then traded cannot be put on their new team’s minor league affiliate.
Players may be kept on minor league rosters from year to year as long as they remain eligible. Players who cross the 100-game threshold midseason can stay on a minor league roster through the end of the season, but must be signed to their team’s main roster or released by the following season’s RFA deadline. Any ineligible player still on a team’s minor league affiliate by the RFA deadline will be released into the free agent pool.
Minor league players kept for the next season still earn RFA bonuses, although their new salary is not added to their team’s salary until they are called up to the main roster.
